As a step parent in your blended family, your job is endless. Not only do you assume all the “natural” roles, but you walk the fine line between friend, family, and rival.

You are a friend, to be there when they want you and to step back when they need you to.

You are family that they want around and care about. They kiss you three times before bed and hold you tight after you doctor a boo boo.

You are a rival to the step children in terms of time from their natural parent. You are a rival to the step child’s biological parent; sometimes they can make things very difficult for everyone involved.

You assume all the parental duties and much more. At times it can seem to be more than what you bargained for. The decision process as to which role you fill in each situation can be exhausting. Then there is the time you choose the wrong role and it all blows up.

In addition to all the work and worry that goes with parenting your natural children you have added so much more. There will be rocky days and there will be triumphant ones. As a parent of any kind you will weather many different experiences. The extra effort as a blended family parent is worth it in the end.
