Children and Music in Today's World
Children and music go hand and hand, it isn’t just for grown ups and teens any more. Our children are immersed in “real” music earlier and earlier. Music has always been a part of relating the world to a child through nursery rhymes and nursery songs. They help teach the alphabet and numbers and colors, all the important basics.
But by the time they have those down, your kids are be-bopping to “The best of both worlds” by Hanna Montana. Of course it could be any number of singles by Hilary Duff, Ali and AJ, The Jonas Brothers, or The Naked Brothers Band.
Not only are these artists targeted directly to the five years and older demographic, but the tweens have their own genre. Take the cuss words out of top twenty pop and rock hits, re-record them with children singing them and viola, you have a Kidz Bopz.
Hanna Montana Rocks!
Yes, the days of worrying over your teenagers music posters are long gone- now you have to start much sooner. My eight year old has a poster of Hanna Montana on her wall. An iconic photo all hip and cool and bigger than life. If you haven’t heard of her I would be surprised, during her last tour, tickets were being scalped for $200 to $2000 a ticket. This is big money!
There may be arguments against how children and music will be affected by this shift, but it is important to also see the opportunity this affords you.
First, you have control over what they listen to and you should certainly exert it. There have been quite a few “popular” songs that I said “no” to the children listening. They are a bit put out but over all their worlds are not crushed, they just move on to the next appropriate song.
Next, use this music as a means to bond with your child. Know the lyrics, help them learn the lyrics, watch them perform the new dance they made up or the one they learned off the movie. It truly is an opportunity to get close to your children and believe it or not, the music isn’t half bad and many times it’s re-makes of songs you already know.
Children and music go hand in hand. Take today's marketing landscape and rather than let it be a detriment, take your children in hand.
Sing, dance and have fun!
